As an enthusiast of both early music and progressive rock, I feel very fortunate to have come across Gryphon's music through the appearance of "Kemp's Jig" in the Story of Folk to Rock compilation. I find their music fantastic, and look forward to a thorough, though belated, immersion in it! Thank you for the informative website.

I may be mistaken but I seem to remember Gryphon performing on Granada TV Closedown (midnight'ish) for a week or so back when they were very unknown!(early 70's). If this is the case does anyone know if any of the recordings are available?. Please reply to the e-mail address.

Madison Square Garden in 1976, I believe, and 20,000 Yes fanatics absolutely roaring for this unknown but captivating support band. It was an unforgettable moment. Yes was brilliant, but Gryphon won everybody over that night.

Just like to say that I am the oldest daughter of Dave Oberlé and it is so nice to see that people still remember my dad and the band and follow their music. I am very proud to be the daughter of such a great man, its just a shame that I was to young to remember him being in the band. Hopefully we will be seeing a new album in the near future!!!! Thank you all for visiting the site and following Gryphon, you have made an old man very happy!!!

I had tickets to see Gryphon(with Yes) at the Colisieum in Ritchfield(Cleveland), Ohio, back in 1975. Unfortunately, I found out that Schlitz malt, Colt 45, and Vodka and orange soda do not mix well. As a result, right when the band began to play, I got sick and puked all over the guy sitting in front me and missed the whole show. They were great seats, 8th row center, too. However, when I was done driving the porcelain bowl I found a big bag of pot on the floor in the bathroom. I did catch Yes' encore.
I was extremely disappointed that I was unable to see Gryphon live, I do have all of the CDs and really enjoy the music. I thought you'all might enjoy my little experience, who knows, I was so close to the stage, maybe, you saw me!

I had the pleasure of seeing Gryphon with Yes in Ft. Worth TX in Sept. 74...enjoyed the concert very much. I am interested in finding out if Richard Harvey's music for the P.D. James series that was aired in America on PBS is available anywhere. It is so gorgeous and it haunts me terribly :)Thank you.

Can't believe it took me so long to discover this site. I'm attending a Yes concert in Concord, CA on 7/31/01 and began looking for my Red Queen album by Gryphon. When I couldn't locate the album, I decided to do a quick search. Glad to see there are still many Gryphon fans.

I first heard Gryphon in 1993, and its great music blew my mind! I am a lover of progressive rock and of medieval music, specially those played on winds and strings combined. Gryphon is simply the only band that mixed both without much effort, with skilled musicians and beautiful harmony. Jethro Tull did some of their songs in the same line, but they have another style. Words simply fail to express what is Gryphon. Gryphon is what Gryphon is.

It's great to find a website about Gryphon. I have so many fond memories of which meeting the band when they played the 'Boat Club' among the most treasured.
Richard Harvey signed my copy of 'Divisions on a Ground' with the words "Thank you for buying my hit album"!.

I bought my copy of Red Queen in a second-hand record shop sometime round '77-78. Unfortunately i never came round to buy the other albums. Not until the late '90´s. Now I have them all on CD except for first Collections and the members various solo efforts. I didn´t like Treason at first. It took several listenings to get into it. I was a bit disappointed that the medieval influences were almost none. But my favourite album to this day is still Red Queen.
I envy those who had the priviliege to see them live. So many other bands of that era, progs and non-progs have reunited, so why can´t Gryphon? Anyway, keep up the good work! Please let us see some up-date´s soon.

I just recently purchased 'Treason' again after originally owning the import LP, but I had not heard it since '77 or '78. I'm glad to hear that it is just as good as I remember it. No, make that better, with the improved CD sound. Thank you very much, Greg.

Thank you for this fantastic site.
I've been a fan of Gryphon since hearing their first album. I saw Gryphon live at Stoke Soccer Ground round '73? when they supported YES. I was pleased to see others remember Gryphon and I was stunned when I read the poll results -obviously many other people share my general musical tastes, with lots of my favourite bands mentioned. As my original L.P.'s are worn out thanks for informing me of the Gryphon Music available on CD.
Like many others I would love to hear a re-formed Gryphon, even if it didn't involve a four original members. I suspect the time is right now for renewed interest in this kind of original and innovative music. Middle-aged poeple like me have raised their families and so have time to listen to music again and there's a new generation who weren't around in the '70's who have no idea what marvellous period it was, musically.

I have loved the music of gryphon since i first heard it in the early seventies. my circle of friends were all prog people and the discovery of Gryphon was an awesome day indeed. red queen was my intro and the other albums were soon to follow. Gryphon is in my top five of the (and i mean the) all time best prog artists.

How can I get a copy of the bootleged album Ethelion? Living in the USA I havn't been able to find out anthing about this album. I was in college when the band toured here and caught there performance at the Boston Garden. I was more than duley impressed, becoming a devout follower. I would dearly love to have a part of that experience to listen to again.

Just stumbled on your web site by way of a PFM site. I have been a fan since I bought my copy of Red Queen on the Bell label (vinyl) back in the glory days of prog (the 70s). It's great to be able to buy your music on CD. Would love to say I saw you in concert.

Overjoyed to finally find a Gryphon page. I've been an inconditional fan for over 20 years, and really have never lost the bug. Now that the material is available on CD, we can appreciate anew the absolute magnanimity of this unique band. They were pretty good too! They were the soundtrack to many a teenage adventure, and still excite just by their sheer imagination and individuality - and there aren't enough of those kind of bands around, are there? Anyway, I had the good fortune to meet and interview Dave Oberle - in Hyde Park - and Richard Harvey - in his Surbiton residence - for some spuriously trumped up 'school magazine', and was struck by Dave's friendliness and down-to-earth approach, and Richard's unreleased solo album which he played to us at deafening volume on industrial sized speakers in his living room. When he was asked to play us the piano part at the staret of Opening Move, he couldn't remember it! My mate John Cheetham - are you out there mate? - sh!
owed him how it went!
Love the website, and all I'd like to see is; an official release of any 70s session stuff, of which there must be oodles, and A FULL BLOWN REFORMATION !!! COME ON BOYS; WE NEED YOU !!
If anyone'd like to correspond, drop me a line. I also have a vinyl copy of Divisions On A Ground, if anybody wants me to tape it.

Out of the blue I started thinking about Gryphon today - did they have a website; have they re-formed???
I was surprised to find their website and sad that they had not re-formed. Delighted to purchase their CDs as my poor old vinyls have suffered from too much playing and a few too many parties.

I first stumbled upon Gryphon in 1992 via "Best Of British Folk" (Castle Communications) which featured "Sir Gavin Grimbold" - I had never heard anything like it - but it wasn't until the summer of 1996 that I actually got the records. I'm amazed every time I hear "Midnight Mushrumps". Still waiting for a reunion CD...

Fascinating to find this site. I didn't know they had built such an international reputation. Love the first album. I also vaguely remember a lusty live version of a sea shanty called "Whaling O a-whaling", maybe at a gig supporting the Strawbs? Its never appeared on record as far as I know. Anyone know anything more?

I have been a fan of Gryphon's music since I first found a copy of "Red Queen to Gryphon Three" in the Birmingham Public Library in 1975! I bought the other albums as soon as I saw them, but one eluded me for years - Midnight Mushrumps - which was only a vague rumour until I spotted it in the mid 80's. Never before or since have I experienced such exquisite delight in buying a record album - and I have thousands! I now have all the original albums and CDs, and still regard them as my all time favourite band - my second favourite being Gentle Giant! If they ever get back together, I want to be the FIRST to know.

I have been a total convert to this band since around 1976. Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity to see the band live, but Gryphon are one of the four or five bands I always cite when listing favourites. When I became a (non-music) student in the aftermath of punk, 'The Unquiet Grave' was a perennial favourite for playing down echoing corridors (with my uncertain recorder playing) or in band rehearsals (with my equally uncertain guitarring). Thank you to the band for many years for absorbed delight !

Holy Krummhorns and hairfrizz Batman!!!!!!! Gryphon, when I finally got the chance to hear them (1998), defintely struck me as being one of the most unique ensembles to come out of the Prog-Rock movement. I was very intrigued by the mix of antiquity, humor and daring, not to mention beautiful, intricate detail in the music. I can't help but lapse into a hearty ARRRRGGGGGGHH whenever I hear "3 Jolly Butchers"!!!
Great job on the site!!! Keep up the good work!!

People still give me strange looks when I tell them I have albums by a mediaeval rock band! How I wish I'd seen them live, especially when supporting Yes. Is it too much to hope that one day Gryphon will fly again?
