I have stumbled somewhat inadvertantly across this band (and website) whilst researching Van Der Graaf Generator. I am deeply impressed with the album 'Red Queen To Gryphon Three'(notably, track 3 - Lament) and am looking forward to getting hold of their other releases.
I would also like to add, that this is a superbly laid out website, brilliantly presented and very informative!

Great to find a web site dedicated to one of my favourite bands. I saw Gryphon a couple of times back in the 1970's - the second time being when they played the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London (1975?) and supported, rather strangely in my opionin, by Richard Digance. I have the first 5 vinyl LP's including an American white label version of RQ2G3 that I must have picked up in London in 1970's.
Love the band and pleased to see that, individually, they are all still at it!

worked with a friend of Gryphon called Roger Curtis (who was a folk musician in his own right and had minor success in a duet called Trousers - anyone know of Roger now & is the Trousers album available on CD?) who leant me the first Gryphon album before it was released, minus cover. I was hooked. I saw them first at the Marquee (ably supported by Roger solo) and a few times afterwards, and bought all their albums on vinyl & more recently on CD. I also bought Divisions on a Ground and many of the other albums on which Gryphon members appeared. It was rumoured that Richard would replace Rick Wakeman in Yes but Patrick Moraz took that role. I would love to see them reform, if only for occasional gigs. Perhaps they could play at my local summer festival, Guilfest

I first saw Gryphon at the Crystal Palace Bowl,London in 1974.It was a beautiful summers day and they played Midnight Mushrumps which was absolutely magical. I have been a fan since then, was a member of their fan club in the seventies and have albums signed by the band which are among my most treasured possessions.

Red Queen to Gryphon Three has been one of my favorite albums since I bought the vinyl in the mid 70's (along with Raindance)! Was thrilled to find it on CD (and then found the double Gryphon/Midnight Mushrumps). Thanks to this site I now see there is more Gryphon music out there and live!!

Hi Eduardo (I will choose to write in english),
Loved your page, specially the interview that you did with David Oberlé.
I was quite impressed by the solo career of Richard Harvey (John Williams playing him, now that’s something).
See you in Gouveia this year!

Luis Loureiro, Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.
I know that I may be asking the impossible... but when Dave came to our Gouveia ArtRock festival last year I really started believing that one day, why not... it wouldn't be a bad idea at all... the Gryphon reunion. Well, at least I now know how such a nice person Dave is! A nice person who was part of one of the most outstanding musical projects of the last century.

I am one of the lucky ones who first heard Gryphon at their very beginnings. At the age of 9 in 1972 I heard Gryphon on the radio and was instantly taken with Richard's recorder playing, so much that took up the recorder at school ... albeit very badly!
Over the years I saved up enough pocket money and bought all the first edition albums and even had the first album signed by the band. I was also very lucky to see Richard Harvey in concert at Worthing Halls when he was on tour with Gordon Gilltrap, what a great concert that was.
Sadly I sold the ablbum (alnong with many others including my signed Jethro Tull albums) to put towards a deposit on a flat which I was buying with my then fiance and now wife ... oh well!
I'm glad to see that there is so much interest in the band and I am pleased to say that I now have all the albums including the two BBC radio session albums on compact disc, the latter was a present from Santa Claus.
Keep listening and enjoying such wonderful music everyone!

I am a Gryphon-fan since I bought there Gryphon LP somewhere in the seventies, later followed by RQ2G3, Raindance and Treason. I consider them to be the most precious LP's of my collection. There is nothing like Gryphon and I don't know of anything coming close to it!

I am a player of Medeival/Renaissance instruments and my dad intoduced me to the first album on LP some years ago. Rooting around his cassette collection revealed Treason and Red Queen... As a bit of a prog-rocker as well, I love them both, and never realised that there was still interest in the band. Only trouble is finding some of the albums in the shops! Are any of the band working on anything new? Love the site too.

Alan Thomson, Mossley Nr, Manchester, UK.
I liked Gryphon's music from the outset, I think I was about 15 when I saw them on TV - and took to their music straight away. I wasn't sure anyone else would remember the band after all this time, so I was delighted when I found this site. I only saw the band once - on tour with Yes in 1975. And although I was also a big Yes fan I enjoyed Gryphon's performance so much that I would've been happy to give Yes a night off and just listen to Gryphon the whole night. I still play their music a lot and, for me it has stood the test of time magnificently.
I also found a CD of Richard Harvey's Guitar Concerto in a record shop a couple of years ago and think it's wonderful. I'd advise any fans impressed by Richard's abilities as a composer on Gryphon's records to check it out.

Fortunately there's a room for this incredible band!

I got into early music in the 70's, David Munrow and Gryphon. It is a true love and has never gone away. I remember seeing Gryphon support Steeleye Span at the Liverpool Empire in the 70's. My favourites are Midnight Mushrumps and the original Gryphon album. Got both on CD and am listening to them now.

Terry Villars, Solihull, West Midlands, UK.
I first saw Gryphon supporting Yes at the Southampton Gaumont in 1975 and was totally blown away - I've loved Midnight Mushrumps and Red Queen with a passion ever since - any news of a live album would be appreciated.

Dear Dave
First of let me just thank you and Sally for a lovely dinner the other night. I'm looking forward to learning a bit more about your music (Gryphon) and listening to some, hopefully Matt or Chris should have some for me to borrow. Hope to see you both soon again. Marky

Reforming now would be a godsend.
There is a niche for the music and with Classic FM available to give airplay (and Satellite play!) I'm sure a reunion tour would go well.

Thank you so much for this page. I have 30 year old cassette tape copies of Gryphon and Midnight Mushrumps and an original Red Queen' LP that no longer have great fidelity (especially the tapes, obviously). Since I discovered this site, tonight, CDs are on the way. Again, thank you!

The first record i heard of Gryphon was Treason, and since then (i think it was 1977 or 1978) i'm tracing for them periodically. I got all their records now, although the list of works is not long, i admire greatly most of their songs.

  Jack ..., Northumberland, England.
Although I have a wide and varied music taste, Gryphon shall always remain my favourite band as there's nothing quite like them. Im just waiting (and hoping) for a re-release of Treason because even though it's not held with as great affection as other gryphon albums, from what i've heard its far better than any other Prog-rock album without making a big thing about it... a reunion would be nice as well though! (the time is right!)

  Dave S., Virginia, USA.
Never heard of this band until I saw them in concert with YES in 1974 or 75 and I have been a HUGE fan ever since. I was always amazed at how much fun they seemed to be having when they played.
It was very contagious!

  Chris Trickett, Calabria, Italy.
Hi. I first found Gryphon in about 1988 in my Dad's record collection. It was Red Queen to Gryphon Three, and the cover fascinated me, so I played it. It took some getting used to, but I was too curious just to put it back. Not ALL of their music does it for me, but some of it is fantastic, and the intro to Lament rivals almost anything else I've ever heard. I left my records in the UK when I moved to Italy to avoid excess baggage fees. I'd like to hear from Italian fans, and of course anybody who shares my passion for Red Queen et al. Also, can I say how nice it is to see comments on this site from ex-members and their families alike. It makes you realise just how intimate the Gryphon experience is.
Cheers. Chris

Saw the band in Summer '76 I believe it was in Chichester Cathedral...the recorder at the end of MM was so beautiful there.....Anyone have any live tapes or CDSplease?.I'd kill for a copy of Down the Dog live!!

  Richard Wileman, ..., UK.
Gryphon (and the Strawbs) were local heroes when I was growing up. Going to see them play at various venues in the early 70's started me on a lifelong love of live music.

You made a great site and also like too much you be part of the credits of "About As Curious As It Can Be". I'm a fan of Gryphon since 1991, it was the first time I heard them and love this group, I made a little brief on one of my sites written in spanish. http://cambalache.htmlplanet.com/gryphon.html
Hope get news about any new compilate or any unreleased song.

Brian may well remember my name (friend of Richard Elen's) / address - he stayed with us on a couple of occassions, once occassioning a visit to Glastonbuty Tor when he did an impromptu recital with his bassoon inside the tower (great sound!).
Hi Brian!

  Phil Vivian, SBarton-on-sea, Hants., UK.
Saw the band as a student in my first term at the then Coventry College of Education (now part of the University of Warwick) when they were the centrepiece of a 'Mediaeval Banquet' in autumn, 1973. Unique sound and act that I've never forgotten. Now I need to get myself and organised and snap up some CDs

  Dave Lazzari, ..., Australia.
Last posted in '98. Glad to see the site's still going. Have technologically progressed & now have the first four albums on CD. Great, as my vinyls are starting to sound their ages - cracks, scratches and pops abound.
RQ2G3 remains my favourite album quickly followed by MM. Lament still the fav track quickly followed by MM then Ethelion. Great live CD (As curious as it gets) is, despite some dodgy mixing, a wonderful example of the band in concert. Gryphon & the children's TV show Magpie (which also had David Munrow as a guest around the same time as Gryphon appeared) were the reason I started to take an interest in early music. I owe the band a large debt.

Well, this is wonderful. Dave and I were together from 1970, married in 72, had Joleigh in 73, divorced in 78. but still the best of friends, (love to Dave and Sally). I loved every minute of the Gryphon experience, (I lost my teapot to the kit at some point), and the gigs were stunning events no matter how many times I saw them. What ever happened to the Trigram management lot? And the Teddy Bears Picnic crew from Fulham? It would be wonderful to see another gig, come on, just one, PLEASE?!?!

Although I continue to explore new music in the progressive and avante guard scene, Gyphon are one of the "feels like home" groups that I will cherish always. I saw them live as opening act for "Yes" during the "Relayer" tour. Gryphon stole the show. I didn't ever stay for all of the Yes show.
Thank you so much for giving us your hearts, witt, wisdom, and unbelievable natural talents!

The music of Gryphon is very special, beautiful and great, every song that Gryphon played was a master piece.

Hi, although the band is probably against bootlegs of their concerts circulating, there is one song from one show that I would like to find: Gryphon joining Yes onstage to perform the Yes song "South Side of the Sky" in December, 1974, in St. Paul, Minnesota, at the end of that leg of the U.S. tour. If anyone has it, please contact me at jcostello716@yahoo.com. I don't mean to rip off the band or deny them any profit. If any member of Gryphon has this on tape, I would gladly pay you what you think is fair for a copy of it. Thank you, and the next move is yours.

Where can I get a copy of the album that was bootlegged in japan. I was at some of the concert's that were recorded and have been looking for it for 30 years. Also how to get some of there more recent recordings.

  Ulises Huete, Miami FL, USA.
I am a nicaraguan musician and I travelled to Spain in the late seventies. In 1977 I listened "Red Queen" for the first time in a record store of Madrid and I was very impressed. Since then I say, if the gods let me survive in a catastrophe with only 10 LPs or CDs on my hands, I choose these ones: Red Queen To Gryphon Three, In A Glass House, Photos Of Ghosts, Novella, Selling England By The Pound, Trilogy, Tales From Topographic Oceans, Conquest Of Paradise, Tralalí-Tralalá (Quilapayún) and Brandenburg Concertos (Bach).
Thank You. A very attractive web site!

The band, along with Amazing Blondel, are responsible for me being a now long standing recorder, crumhorn, shawm, rauschpfeife and bagpipe player from which I still derive much pleasure. RH and BG gave me some help and encouragement via the FOG society many years ago. Will there ever be a reunion concert? Ah! Now there's a dream!

The local record shop informs me that "Collection" and "Glastonbury Carol" are out of print.
How can I get these recordings?

Kevin Braithwaite, Huby, Yorkshire, England, UK.
After 30 years of listening to all the usual progressive bands (no need to mention their names) I had heard of Gryphon and listened to some tracks a long time ago. I finally Purchased the 2 on 1 Albums and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to all the tracks and have been surprised at diversity and intricacy of the very progressive and ahead of its time music. Maybe we could see Gryphon supporting Yes again in the future.

Fantastic!
I was born in '76, and remember hearing Gryphon in my early years, but none since. The only music I could find at my parents was the first half of the first album on audio cassette.
Amazon.co.uk have some albums though, so I've just placed an order!

Saw them many years ago with YES. Have thier albums. Would love to see them open for YES on the upcoming tour! Any chance of that?
