I don't know where to begin.
I've been an incurable Gryphon NUT for over 2 decades. I do wonder if Richard Harvey is simply too busy or is studiously ignoring the recent interests in the band! I feverishly hope some of the original albums could be remixed into surround sound formats someday. These men were such brilliant players.
Overjoyed to find the site. Will visit again!

I was fortunate enough to discover Gryphon around 1975 after seeing them at The Royal Albert Hall in London supporting Alan Stivell. What an introduction to their wonderful music! They were truly amazing and it's a pity that the music of today does not often come up to Gryphon's high standards.
I love all their music, especially Estampie, Midnight Mushrumps and latterly Glastonbury Carol. Since those times I have the honour of becoming close friends with Dave Oberle and Sally and value them as "real" genuine friends.
I look forward to any more of Gryphon's recorded material that one day may surface out of the void.
Excellent Site!!!!

Hey everyone.
I am Richard Harvey's nephew, he's in Thailand at the moment but i was just writing in to this website just to say how amazing it is that everyone on here idolises Gryphon so much. At the moment Richard is composing lots of music. Just finished composing music to the new film that is coming out called "Luther" about Martin Luther (not martin luther king), i am not sure when that is out. But yer, i'll give him the address of this website so he can come on and see what a great job was done. Also i saw Brian recently. Quite offputting when you are on a cricket pitch just about to bowl and all you hear is the low pitched noise of his bassoon at the boundaries edge.
Well great website.

Heard of Gryphon advertised on KSHE radio, 94.7 in St. Louis and one day a few friends and I went to, I think the name of the place, was Granny's Rocker in Illinois and heard your band. I had always heard the name, but never actually heard your band until then. The music was great, and after that, I never heard of Gryphon again. After all these years, thanks to the internet, I looked you all up. Dig out the equipment, come back and do a concert for us maybe at the VP Fair under the Gateway Arch in downtown St. Louis. Would like to see you at my "older" age. OK, I ain't that old! You guys went into hiding all these years and it's time for a new run to the St. Louis area. Hope to see you all soon!

David Oberle sang back-up vocals on the track "Mannequin", from Wire's Pink Flag album, back in 1977 (HARVEST SHSP 4076 UK). Both shared producer Mike Thorne, thus the connection.

From time to time I check the site to see what Gryphon is up to. Imagine my surprize and delight that there is a new album coming
out! Could life get any better? Hello to all! I love you and your music just as much as I did when I sat on the tall stacks of speakers in Louisville, Kentucky in 1974. I am thrilled you are recording again and look forward to the tour that was promised so long ago... Congratulations! All My Love, Sarah Bounds

Reviews of the albums would be nice, liked the info on where band members are now, how about a discography of recordings as sidemen. I came upon the band by accident and was blown away as a King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull And Blackmore's Night fan and as a composer and performer of progressive rock, Gryphon's music was a wonderful surprise

I'll never forget the first time I heard "The Unquiet Grave". It was in the medieval city of Cáceres, in Spain. I was inmediately transported to the ancient times. Ever since then I go back to Gryphon's music when I need to feel the strength and magic of the old ages. Thanks a lot for those good times

What a fantastic musical voyage you can travel closing your eyes with the music of Gryphon!. Medieval & Medievil (Gryphon), ethereal & magical (Mushrumps), magnificent & tangled (Red Queen, "Lament" makes me cry), trivial & grandiose (Raindance), earthly & quirky (Treason, the most Gentlegiant-esque album). In a word : dazzling. Eduardo, this website is really fantastic. A real labour of love.

I had the pleasure of meeting Brian Gulland at my dads 50th birthday party in Jan (he will kill me for that) Its was great to see them talking about the Gryphon days and what they got up to, although I will say sitting in a resturantlistening to both of them sing beatles songs at the top of their voices was a little embarrassing!!! I would love to see Gryphon play as I never got the chance so I think I will be having strong words with dad and try and make alot of your dreams come true!! Thanks again to everyone who has followed them from the start, it makes my dad very proud xxx

This is such a cool band!
I'm a 19-year-old Western Kansan who loves Yes, Genesis, Kansas (of course), Jethro Tull and the like who just recently got the Red Queen/Raindance double CD from the Internet (about the only way I can get good music that I don't already have!). Wow. This is a great band.
I will definitely be looking to get the rest of the music sometime in the near future...

Hi, I'll get right to the point. I'm trying to find out if anyone recorded a show that Gryphon did as the opening band for Yes in Minnesota in winter 1974. I especially want the encore where Gryphon joined Yes on "South Side of the Sky." Do you have it, or know someone who has it, and can I get a copy?

A very unique and talented group of musicians. It is a shame that their music is being lost in the past. However, it is good to see that the individuals from the group especially Richard Harvey are still about and making music..

One of my all-time favourite bands! I've heard first their debut album and then it didn't grow on me very much, because I was a prog-music bigot (what a shame!). After a while I've got hold of "Red Queen..." and I was completely blown away, so in a short time I did my best to collect all their studio albums and finally I've learned to appreciate the whole Gryphon legacy, even the debut!
Now I can undoubtedly state, that Gryphon is one of the most important and musically superb bands from 1970s, it's a group of the same calibre as Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Genesis and of course my favourite one-off Comus. Keep up this wonderful work and I do hope that Gryphon will re-unite someday and visit Russia with a tour, you even cannot imagine, how much people here love this music and are eager to pay money for Gryphon live show! Russia opens its door to Gryphon!
Cheers, Lev

It was back in the early 70's that I was turning my friends on to Gentle Giant and Gryphon, who at that time was only aware of groups like Yes & Genesis etc. I was very lucky to see them open for Yes in 1974, on a Sunday night at the Atlanta Omni. What a visual treat! Something I will never forget!!!

I very much enjoyed this website. I have been a huge Gryphon fan since the 70s. In Southern California I have never met anyone else who has heard of these guys. A shame. I play recorder, keyboards, sax, crumhorn and sing. I have always loved early music and rock and roll and Gryphon really put them together.

It's fantastic, esp. the third album and some pieces from Treason. I also like Robert Fripp, Peter Hammill, David Sylvian etc. I knew about Gryphon from an Encyclopaedia of Progressive Rock by G. Melnikov (in Russian) that contains a lot of information about little known non-commercial bands.

It took more than 30 years for me to listen for the first time to the fabulous Gryphon music. I'm completely knocked out... and I only know two of their albums: the amazing "Red Queen to Gryphon Three" and "Raindance". The first one is really an absolute masterpiece of modern music. Ageless, timeless. Thank you..

This is a great site, I've REALLY enjoyed it and will continue to come back -- thanks so much!!! I have two teenage daughters who hate Gryphon. They call it "Medieval Punk". Whenever I need time to myself I can just put on some Gryphon and they run upstairs to their rooms & shut the door. HA!!!

Well done for a fab website.
What a talent Gryphon were, and what a great idea a reunion would be. Like so many other people in the guestbook I saw the band support Yes in May 1975 at QPR FC. They were astonishingly loud and just so unusual that I, like many others on that tour became an immediate fan. The guys in the band were truly talented musicians in their own right, unlike so much of the garbage our children listen to today.

Hmm, this has brought back many good memories! I saw Gryphon in '75 and again in '76 - both times in London. Already had the first 4 LP's and then bought Treason when it appeared in 1977 (is that right?). Curiously, I have two different copies of Red Queen - one 'standard' Transatlantic pressing and another that claims to be 'banded for air play' on an American label. And then last year (2001) had the good fortune to catch Brian Gulland playing with the New Victory Band in Faversham.
Thanks for the memories !

I first met Gryphon in 1975 when I purchased a copy of Raindance, and since then I got really mad. in 1979 I chanced to meet Brian Gulland himself, when he played live with Malicorne in Florence, and we chatted for about two hours. What an experience! I also founded a group, called Spriggan, very Gryphon-related (with recorders, bassoon and crumhorns!), and the group is still alive after 20 years, even if not so "gryphonish" nowadays. The first hearing of "Juniper Suite" made me jump on my chair! It was 25 years ago but it still get the effect. Cheerio.

Hello, my name is Martin Vengadesan, a progressive rock fan from Malaysia. Despite owning close to 200 prog rock CDs, I had not heard Gryphon's music until last week when I picked up the first four albums on 2CDs --- it's great stuff, especially Midnight Mushrumps and Red Queen. The catalyst to this purchase, aside from the continously glowing reviews I've read, was a concert by John Williams in Kuala Lumpur late last year, in which Richard Harvey proved himself to be the most amazing musician I've ever heard ...
Thank you, Gryphon.
P.S. Thanks for running this site
