October 1997

Hello Friends,

This is just a short note to let those of you who have not already heard know that I have finally decided to leave Steeleye. I have had many happy years working within the confines of the band 28 to be exact, and it has always been peopled by interesting and dynamic characters. Life in Steeleye has been varied and exciting and I am grateful for the time I have spent in it.

But there has always been a tension, since the band split in '78, between the band activities and the extra-mural work that I began at that time. I have had a solo career running concurrently with Steeleye, whilst also trying to fit in work with the Carnival Band. When my voice decided not to come out and play a couple of years ago, it gave me pause for thought. It was finally bourne in upon me that maybe I was trying too hard. Maybe something had to go.

It's taken me a while to pluck up the courage to let go of my security blanket, but I feel it is the right thing to do at this moment in time. I have given of my best in Steeleye, but other activities call me now The band will benefit because they can re-invent themselves, in the way Steeleye has before, and it will be interesting to see where they take the music from here. They will be bringing out a new album to coincide with a tour next March. Look out for it.

Meanwhile, I go to Ireland with Nick and Troy in October and out with the Carnival Band for a feast of carols and pantomime in December. There is work for next year being organised and dates will follow.

When I am not feeling terrified I am wildly excited by tile prospect of change.

You who receive these letters are among my most loyal supporters, and I thank you for that. Sometimes it's hard to remember that all our endeavours are in reality dependent upon you and your interest. For, much as one may create for one's own soul, it is far more fun if somebody is listening.

        All best wishes,

December Letter      'Time for Maddy to Leave the Bus' Letter
